Overview
Manila, the capital of the Philippines, has become somewhat of a turn-off to tourists in recent years because of its high traffic and pollution. It's a crowded and frantic city that doesn't have much in the way of physical beauty, and, as a result, many people simply pass through Manila on their way to another Asian destination. However, not all aspects of Manila are lacking. It is a city with an exciting nightlife and an energy that is not easily matched. In fact, tourists who are able to accept the fast pace of the city find that it's a much more enjoyable place than they imagined. However, expect delays in all of your planning -- there's likely to be traffic getting anywhere you're headed and a wait once you arrive.
Nightlife
Manila is the home to one of the most vibrant theater scenes in Southeast Asia. A night spent at the theater there will not be wasted. For an indie night at the movies, check out Cine Adarna. Run by the University of the Philippines Film Institute, Cine Adarna showcases primarily art house films. One of the greatest things about dining in Manila is that it used to be a Spanish colony, therefore there are selections of both traditional Filipino and Spanish restaurants to choose from. Sightseeing Attractions
The sightseeing attractions in Manila are located around Manila Bay. At the northern end you'll find the ruins of Intramuros. There you can browse museums, or you can play a round of golf on the course that was built over an ancient moat. Within Intramuros is the Manila Cathedral -- one of the most important churches in the Philippines. Right outside of Intramuros is the Luneta. The Luneta is the home of an open-air theater, a planetarium, and the Manila Hotel. Additionally, it was the site of the execution of Jose Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines. At the mouth of Manila Bay you'll find the island of Corregidor. Here you can bike or walk down the island's trails or explore the remains of fierce battles that were fought over the island during World War II.
